Colours in our environment have effect on our mood, emotional stability and well being. If you feel that you need some balance in your home environment, or you want to live a more positive and energised life - you can give yourself a push to the right direction by creating an environment that surrounds you with certain colours. It certainly works for me - as much as I love grey (colour of natural linen!), I do need to have colours in my home that can bring different energy into my life.
Painting your walls in a colour that brings your preferred energy into your home is always a great idea. However, for most of us that may not be an option. Even if you keep your walls, floor and ceiling in a more neutral - white or grey colour - home decor accessories can be a very helpful addition to the colour scheme of your home.
Blue is one of the most calming and relaxing colours. Just look at the blue sky, and you will soon see what I mean! Looking at colour blue (be it the sky or the sea) always helps me relax and be present. That's why I always try to have some blue, navy or teal accessories in my home.
Having colour blue in your home environment can help you focus and relax. Blue is the colour that affects your emotions on a very deep level. According to colour therapists, blue is a colour that helps you contemplate and having blue in your home will result in creating a calming environment. You will feel more secure and peaceful.
Because I live in rather cold climate, painting my bedroom walls in blue would make it too dark. Instead, I use blue in home decor accessories.
I have a bunch of pillows in variations of blue and I scatter them on my grey sofa. In some cases I choose blue as an accent on a grey pillow, as in the hand painted design of a blue deer head. I like hugging that pillow while watching TV or reading in the evening, it helps me wind down after a long day.
I like to carry that feeling of calm and peace into the kitchen too, therefore I make sure I have at least one set of table linens in blue or teal. I especially enjoy having family dinners with some nice relaxing music in the background and serving dinner to the table with simple grey natural linen tablecloth and teal colour napkins.
Green can bring balance and harmony into your life. Having green in your environment can help you create a space for rest and restoration. Green is one of the most relaxing colours for the eye.
Having green accessories in my home helps me bring more calmness and harmony into my family life. I also love pairing blue and green pillows on my sofa - that way I have both relaxing and refreshing colours around me.
Green is also a colour that symbolises vegetation, outdoors and freshness. I love having green table linens in the kitchen and I often use them for lunches. I have a few plants in my house and I enjoy surrounding myself with living things. Green colour in fabrics, especially natural fabrics such as linen, makes me feel more alive and closer to nature in my home.
Yellow is a colour of sunshine and can make us smile and feel happy. It's a colour that brings laughter, positive energy and confidence. It is a very optimistic colour, and especially for people who live in climate that lacks sunshine throughout the year, it is advisable to have yellow accents in home interior to maintain good spirits and energy.
Not only colour yellow is warm, it is also associated with food and can increase your appetite. Therefore I often start the day having breakfast served on yellow table linen. Yellow napkins are my daughter's favourites, especially in the winter when there is very little sun outside. I find that she has better appetite in the morning if her breakfast comes in a yellow bowl on a yellow napkin.
If your interior is dominated by white, off-white or light grey colours, having a yellow lumbar pillow can instantly make your living room more alive. You might find that you become more optimistic and positive when you have yellow in your home environment. Tried and tested! :)
I've suggested three very common colours - blue, green and yellow - that can make an impact on your environment and well-being. I've used them all together in different rooms, or pairing blue and green, green and yellow in the same space. Colours really affect me, and I wanted to share this with you and hopefully help you make your home environment more balanced, peaceful and fill it with positive energy.
You can try using those colours in your home decor elements and see if it makes a difference to how you feel. Let me know it goes! :)
