I love vacations. Holidays of all sorts. Going away, being somewhere else, somewhere warm, sunny. Relaxing on a beach. Walking in a tiny Mediterranean town. Lush green plants, blossoms, pebbles. Being far away.
Don't get me wrong - I do love my home and being at home, it's the cosiest place to be! But I love the idea of the holiday and the feeling of travelling, going away, visiting different places. With my family getting bigger and having small children, my holiday choices are slightly limited and I cannot get away as much as I'd like to sometimes.
That's why I try to create the holiday spirit in my home, so I can feel that there is a place that feels like vacation while I'm at home. I dedicated my living room to that and I decorated my sofa and chairs with pillows and hung some artwork, bought some plants to make the atmosphere the way I want it - relaxed and colourful.
Yellow always makes me think of a sunshine and flower blossom. Having seen this beautiful blossom that is at the same time chaotic and very geometric, I combined both qualities in creating this hand painted design (available at Pillowlink).
To create a place that gently reminds me to breathe and rest - I use grey pillows in different textures. They always remind me of sand, hot weather and the cooling down ground at the dusk.
Grey linen to me is very holiday-like. Just think of linen fabric as the number one material for making amazing beach wear. I love loose linen trousers, shirts and dresses. I always wear linen when I'm at the seaside. It also has a particular texture and is breathable - makes me think of a windy beach and fresh air.
For the tactile moments I love hugging a knitted wooly pillow. I purchased a light beige armchair, which looks great with a grey knitted pillow. The pillow is soft, warm and reminds me of a white sand beach and pebbles. There's just nothing like wrapping yourself in a wooly shawl in the evening, after being out all day walking on a sand.
Texture in grey makes me think of a surface of the palm tree bark. It's rough, yet inviting your touch with its hairy fibres reaching out like tiny hands.
Speaking of grey... My in-laws' cat loves hanging out on the sofa with some pillows. He seems to particularly enjoy brown pillow with golden dots. There is definitely something holiday-like about that combination!
Also, cats are the ultimate experts when it comes to relaxation and enjoying a ray of sunshine in the living room. We humans still have so much to learn.
I've learned that the best way to preserve vacation memories is to actually fully be in the moment while it lasts. When I'm travelling these days - even on a short trip or a walk - I try to soak in all the beauty around me. Then I take it home and I use it to fuel my creative process. The designs that I make, or even the way I arrange my living room, can really capture those feelings and moments.
I truly believe that the memories and feelings we use when making something will have that unique energy and carry it into our environment. This way our holidays can be part of our home; when we take a seat on the sofa and hug a pillow, we can be transported to a nice sandy beach. To me, it's a great way to combine both worlds - being at home and being away on vacation. This is how the best place - home - gets even better.
